The Rialto Theatre has stepped-up publicity for its shows by using their east-facing wall as a giant billboard. As drivers head west into downtown, they can't help but notice the new plug for the theatre's upcoming Calexico and the filming of "Flor de Muertos" event.
The muralist, Joe Pagac, says that after the current composition expires, he will likely be hired to paint a new one - maybe for the Rialto's upcoming Sonic Youth show in January. Having done similar murals in Phoenix, Pagac would be interested in turning the painting process itself into a live performance, complete with spectators and music.
Calexico and the filming of 'Flor de Muertos,' takes place on Sunday, November 8, after the All Souls Procession Finale. 'Flor de Muertos' is a documentary celebration of the Twentieth Anniversary All Souls Procession, filmed live as Calexico performs. According the Rialto Theatre's website, the theatre will be transformed into a Day of the Dead street scene, with a huge shrine onstage, processions by the performers, and other wonders.
