Three Kinds of Fun

Multi-generational offerings from Broadway in Tucson brighten up winter in the desert, with a wide variety of entertainment options.

In December the Australian group The Ten Tenors, an international singing sensation, will present songs from their latest CD Nostalgica as well as holiday classics. With eight shows between December 15-20 at the historic Fox Theatre there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to get in the spirit.

From January 19-24, a sea of pink might be seen to descend on downtown Tucson, as excited crowds of tweens and teens, mothers and daughters (and grandmothers?) flock to the Music Hall to "bend and snap" with Becky Gulsvig (Amber Von Tussle in Hairspray on Broadway for 2 years) as Elle Woods, who single handedly disproves the "dumb blonde" myth as she takes on Harvard Law in Legally Blonde The Musical. Being true to yourself never goes out of style, a powerful message for the young, certainly, and delivered with gusto, a cute dog and a full Equity cast. Robbie Cox, a former Tucsonan, plays the dog wrangler who handles the pair of dogs playing Bruiser. The MTV broadcast was the first (and only) musical aired in its entirety on TV, creating a whole new audience for the genre. Eight performances from January 19 to 24 are bound to generate lots of giggles and happy feet. Prepare to want to jump up and dance.

Finally, this impressive triumvirate finishes strongly with a traditional and perennial favorite, Fiddler on the Roof, rounding out the winter season in February (23-28) at the Music Hall. With such beloved songs as "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were a Rich Man" and "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," Fiddler on the Roof will never lose its appeal. It features four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.
