KXCI Goes Solar

Real People, Solar Sustainable Radio

By Nicole Nixon

In January, Technicians for Sustainability (TFS) awarded Tucson's community radio station KXCI 91.3FM its 2010 solar grant. Based on the non-profit organization's environmentally friendly goals and actions, TFS's full grant of $32,500 will pay for installation of solar panels onto KXCI's 106-year-old building located in the Armory Park Historic District.

These panels will save the radio station approximately $25,200 in utility costs over the next 25 years, said Aimee King, community outreach coordinator for TFS.

"Anytime we can do something smart and save money we are going to look to do it," said Randy Peterson, KXCI's general manager/development director.
