Celebrating the Tapestry of Our Community

By Kenya Johnson

Carnaval, the annual Brazilian festival held 40 days before Ash Wednesday, is known for its vibrant music, dancing, gorgeous costumes and an energy that can only be described as joyful. Around the world and throughout the United States, Carnaval has become an annual tradition and celebration.

In 2008, members from the Afro-Brazilian ensemble, Batucaxé (pronounced bah-too-cah-SHEH), got together at Himmel Park for a jam session with a few performers and friends for an intimate, fun Carnaval gathering.

This year, the 3rd Annual Tucson Carnaval has flourished into an all-day festival that includes a parade, food and art vendors, hands-on workshops, live entertainment and a procession where everyone can participate.

It’s happening on Saturday, February 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Armory Park, 220 S. 6th Ave. Across the street, the Tucson Children’s Museum is offering a discounted $2 admission to all visitors that day.

Cliff Berrien, Batucaxé’s Artistic Director and the Tucson Carnaval planning committee chair, says that with this event, community is the key.

“Tucson Carnaval is special because it celebrates spring, life, the arts and community connections. Carnaval is a world-wide event, but we definitely add our own flavor.”

That flavor contributed to this year’s theme – A Global Tapestry of Celebration.

“We chose a theme that highlights how we weave the unique threads of our community into a vibrant tapestry of music, dance, song and art from many different cultures,” says Berrien. “And that’s really Tucson.”

Batucaxé is partnering with City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department, Tucson Children’s Museum, Armory Park Neighborhood Association and Many Mouths One Stomach for the event.

Scheduled performances include: Batucaxé, Pumpkin Vince Singers, Odaiko Sonora, Carnivaleros, Spirit Familia, Jovert, Key Ingredients of African Soul and Flam Chen. n
