Don’t just buy your honey chocolate for Valentine’s Day! Instead, treat your sweetie to the “Father Garces’ Chocolate to Die For” festival on Saturday, February 13.
The event commemorates the 18th century Spanish missionary Father Francisco Garces, killed by natives in Yuma after he infamously requested an allowance to finish drinking his chocolate prior to his inevitable death.
Hosted by Presidio San Agustin del Tucson, 133 W. Washington St., the family-friendly event will feature chocolate creations from local restaurants such as El Charro, La Cocina, El Minuto and more.
“The tickets are $5 and that will get you three tastings,” said event organizer Erica Coleman. “Every restaurant will have their own table set up and you can go around and pick the chocolate items you most want.” Coleman says that rumors of chocolate tamales and mole have enthusiasts particularly excited.
The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also hosts famed storyteller Jean Baxter, relating the fate of Father Garces, and El Presidio Neighborhood walking tours.
Each guided tour costs $15, but Coleman says for $18 people can enjoy both the tour and tastings.
