After two decades, Yikes Toys is changing guards with Patricia Katchur taking the reins from Hazel Rugg. "She possesses just the right amount of wackiness to keep up the Yikes spirit and move it into a new era," Rugg said.
If you haven't been to the wholly unique and fabulously fascinating shop, this Saturday is a great time to visit. Katchur is hosting a meet and greet on Saturday, March 20 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in conjunction with neighboring gallery Bohemia's seventh anniversary celebration.
For the young and young at heart, it's a must for fans of fun. Zocalo's Phoenix Michael says Yikes is "Willy Wonka meets Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. This eye-popping, jaw-dropping humdinger of a toy store includes an astonishing inventory with squirrel underpants, thumb wrestling masks, yo-yos, wind-up toys, "Where The Wild Things Are" plush dolls, kites, mustache combs and Sigmund Freud refrigerator magnets. This is the place to find a Rubik's Cube, an Etch-A-Sketch, or pirate adhesive bandages. Here one constantly overhears customers saying things like, "Cool!" and "Dad, look!"
