When California-based Cali Kind Clothing Company pulled out of 417 N. 4th Ave., Cafe Passe's owner Sabine Blaese took the opportunity to expand her breakfast, lunch and beverage nook into the neighboring locale.
"The cafe needed more indoor space, especially for the summertime." Blaese envisioned the new real estate including other local merchants. "The new space is quite large, 1400 square feet and naturally divided into three areas."
Taking her business plan to the city's developmental services department, Sabine said she expected to be denied, but instead, the plans went through easily.
"I couldn't have done it without their help," Blaese said.
In late March, remodeling work was in full swing, seeing Blaese painting the upstairs room which will be her new office, and Tana Kelch doing drywall patching in the space that will house Bohemia's satellite shop.
The front area will be dedicated to cafe seating, featuring a small stage abutting the storefront window. Behind the expanded cafe will be retail shops: The Playground (Tabatha Bell), focusing on vintage art, clothes, gifts; Bohemia's satellite; Duncan's Gallery (Duncan Linthicum) featuring jewelry and art.
"It basically will resemble one little 'village,' where you can shop, peruse, surf the internet with a cup of coffee, eat, all in one," Blaese said.
An opening is scheduled for April 15. Call 624-4411 or BohemiaTucson.com for details.
