On April 17, the community-minded students of UA’s Camp Wildcat host its biggest fundraiser of the year, Quiz 4 Kids!, at the Arizona Historical Society, 949 E. 2nd St.
The group is hoping to raise a few thousand dollars to help cover the costs of their six, weekend-long camps, which typically cost $3000 each, said Lynn Garnaat, an event director for the camp.
These weekend camps are only part of what the 45-year-old non-profit organization provides for kids in the community. It hosts a number of events including a week-long summer camp, day activities, and adventure camps where students take junior high kids on a day long hike, all geared toward exposing them to the idea that college can be a realized goal.
Since most of the students who come to the camps are from underprivileged homes where their parents and older siblings may not have gone onto college, the UA students work to educate the kids about university life, helping them to see that a higher education is a definite possibility in their lives.
“College is an attainable goal,” Garnaat said.
“These kids are bright; they just may not have realized they are afforded the opportunity to go to college,” she said. “That is why we are letting them know about the scholarships and financial aid available as well as informing them on what options they have once in school.”
The student run organization’s Quiz 4 Kids! A Benefit Auction begins at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $15. The event will feature both a silent and live auction where guests can bid on donations from local businesses, such as event tickets, art pieces and golf packages, as well as a dinner and trivia competition.
