What’s on Tap

By Austin Counts
Now that spring is here, Tucsonans need no reason to spend a nice relaxing afternoon enjoying a great pint of brew at some of the Old Pueblo’s finest breweries.

Thunder Canyon Brewery, 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd., is serving up some tasty beverages this month. First up is the Imperial Porter (9.2% ABV*), a rich malty brew that contains double the ingredients as their normal porter and is aggressively hopped for a sharp finish with chocolate and coffee overtones. Next is the Rye Heat (5.2% ABV*) a medium body ale with a deep copper color made with rye and barley malts that goes down smooth with a refreshingly distinct sour aftertaste. No trip to this brewery would be complete without trying their award-winning Countdown Honey Brown (5.2% ABV*), which has been a medal winner for the past two years at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. This medium bodied brew is made from local mesquite and honey-roasted grains to provide a flavor as uniquely distinct as the Southwest itself.

Nimbus Brewing Company, at 3850 E. 44th St. and 6464 E Tanque Verde Rd., is seeing a change in head brewers as Scott Swartz is turning over the grains to Lijah Foreger from Abita Brewing in New Orleans at the start of April. Swartz, who has spent the past 13 years brewing for Nimbus, is leaving patrons with his final signature batch of Unfiltered Belgian White Ale ( 5% ABV*), a favorite among Tucson’s beer drinking community. Made with sweet and sour orange peels and Tetts hops, this ale is sure to complement any spring afternoon.

Until next month, cheers!
