Herb Stratford, organizer of the 4th Annual Fox Tucson Theatre Summer Classic Movie Series, appreciates the artistic importance of projecting movies on the big screen.
"Regardless of your plasma or 52-inch TV screen, 'Lawrence of Arabia' wasn't meant to be seen in your living room."
As such, the founder and former executive director of the Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation chose films released between 1934 and 1964 as an opportunity to "experience the way cinema changed over the decades."
"When you think about the filmmakers of those decades," explains Stratford, "they wanted their films screened in movie palaces."
The series' theme is "Women, War and Westerns" and will show flicks on Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. in June, July and August. See schedule below.
For the 3rd Annual Fox Theatre Summer Children's Program, the Fox will host a series of nine Saturday afternoon events from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Stratford is bringing back the format that the Fox used from 1930 to 1954, when the theatre screened serials and classic cartoons, and hosted the Mickey Mouse Theatre Club - the venue for the Mouseketeers before they appeared on TV.
"I hope that grandparents bring kids and say, 'I watched these movies at the Fox,'" said Stratford.
Four episodes of each serial will be screened at every event, starting with the "The Wolf Dog," (1933) starring Rin-Tin-Tin Jr. on June 13, 20 and 27; "Undersea Kingdom" (1936) with Ray "Crash" Corrigan on July 11, 18 and 25; and "The Green Archer" (1940) on August 1, 8 and 15.
As part of each program before the July screenings, the Tucson Children's Museum will offer free craft projects related to "Undersea Kingdom" in the theatre lobby.
Tickets for the children's program are $5 for children of all ages. Tickets for the Classic Movie Series are $8 for adults; $6 for students, seniors and active military. For more information, or to purchase tickets for either series, call 547-3040 or visit www.FoxTucsonTheatre.com.
