Art for Living

Embracing Tucson’s artistic nature, sisters Monica Hay-Cook and Marlies Hay-William opened Deco Boutique last November with the goal of bringing affordable, unique items that are eco-friendly and made in the United States to the Tucson community.

In addition to their eco-friendly pursuits they also look to support local artists, showcasing works of art from a Tucson artist or group of artists each month. Paintings from Maryann Kot are displayed throughout the store this month and will be showcased until the end of May.  In June, recycled art will be featured in the “Trash to Treasures” show.

“We are kind of an artistic family, so it’s our way of supporting the arts and encouraging the arts,” Hay-Cook said. Their tagline, art for living, is apropos considering their offerings range from jewelry pendants made of cornhusks to all natural dog treats. “The store carries unique, unusual items for your home, for gifts or for yourself,” Hay-William said.

From the outside, the boutique looks small, but it expands exponentially as patrons make their way through the door.  Three rooms hold items such as crocheted, beaded jewelry made by Hay-William, Frisbees made from recyclable materials, artist shirts featuring works by Van Gogh and Monet and even letters taken from signs throughout the Tucson area.

The second room is dedicated to western memorabilia while the back room features a wide array of beads, which is going to be expanded in the coming months. The store will also offer classes where people can come and learn how to make jewelry and art themselves including beaded jewelry taught by Hay-William, and wire art and jewelry and art classes taught by Hay-Cook.

In honor of Mother’s Day, the sisters will be holding an event on May 8, from 1pm-4pm, where children and mothers alike can make their own beaded bracelets and jewelry to give as presents or wear themselves. One bracelet will cost $10 and two will cost $15 and Hay-Cook and Hay-William will be there to help with the design and jewelry finishing.

Deco Boutique is located at 2612 E. Broadway Blvd., and can be reached by calling 319-0888. Their website, DecoArtTucson.com is currently under construction.
