From The Editor - Sept 2010

By Jamie Manser

My favorite part of being a Tucsonan is hosting newbies. It’s a win-win – I play tour guide, rattle off local history, visit unique Tucson spots and get to fall in love with this town all over again. What most people comment on is the wealth of art and the laid back energy. I always say with a smile, “That’s why I live here.”

Friends from Phoenix recently visited and were impressed by the collaboration in the music scene, noting that bands of different genres hang out with and support each other. My sister-in-law was here in the spring, and said “downtown has an amazing artsy vibe.” Yep, indeed. I am guilty of forgetting, though.

Sometimes it does take a visitor or a vacation to turn me back on to the town, and working on Zocalo editions like this one. As we collected the upcoming performance seasons, I was blown away by the amount of creation in this little burg. No wonder the energy is so palpable; you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting some kind of artist. A big thank you goes to Herb Stratford and ShowUp.com for contributing a bulk of the coverage for the performing arts spotlight.

As the townies know, September sees happenings go full board. The limits of print do not enable us to include everything, so please keep an eye on TheZMag.com. We also are pleased to announce our radio partnerships with KXCI and The Mountain. Several spots for “KXCI’s Cultural Calendar” will run during the week on 91.3FM. On Friday mornings at 8:55 a.m. on 92.9FM is “Hip &Happening Downtown.” We appreciate working with both stations and hope you will tune in for these highlights. Please email me at Jamie@ZocaloTucson.com for details on how to get your events featured!
