In 1986 GLOW was the “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” a short-lived syndicated television show featuring flamboyant female brawlers. These days in Oracle, AZ, GLOW is an extraordinary annual coming together of art, performance, music and food that tickles the fancy of dreamers and free spirits. The GLOW festival is famous among townies for the playful experience it offers all comers under the magnificent moon.
September 24 and 25, Oracle’s Triangle L Ranch welcomes adventurous individuals to don their best, brightest glow-in-the-dark fashions and shimmy into an illuminating evening of unique entertainment. With dozens of lit up installations and exhibits, there’ll be something aglow in every corner of the historic homestead property. A gallery will be set up in the 1890s adobe barn and the old windmill will no doubt be a beacon in the darkness, while festooned giant oaks and corral fences will most certainly light up the night.
Triangle L Ranch owner Sharon Holnback acts as a discerning curator and caretaker dedicated to cultivating a vibrant arts scene in Oracle. Artist residencies are ongoing at the Triangle L, which legend says was a hangout of Wild West showman Buffalo Bill. Reached for comment, Holnback reminds attendees “GLOWing fashions encouraged!”
“You’re not going to be disappointed,” promises local musician Gary Mackender, a performer at GLOWs past, speaking warmly of “a fabulous event” featuring “a stellar group of artists.” Artist Mykl Wells says GLOW is “all inclusive,” with “no audience, just participants.” Look for creations from Wells and Holnback’s lantern making workshops suspended high overhead.
Here’s some GLOW ground rules. Bring a flashlight and warm clothing. Wear comfortable shoes; stay on designated paths. Rain or shine, the party goes on. Pets are not allowed. Most importantly, have fun! Oracle flavor experts Casa Rivera, Nonna Maria’s and The Pie Lady will provide eats, with music furnished by The Swigs, The Guilty Bystanders and more. GLOW is a BYOB affair.
GLOW runs from 7 p..m. to 11 p.m. both evenings. Tickets for each night are $10 for adults and $5 for youth under 18 (who must be accompanied by an adult), available in advance at Bohemia, 2920 E. Broadway Blvd., or the Oracle Farmers Market. Children under 3 are free. See TriangleLRanch.com/glow.htm for driving directions and details on a special shuttle package from Tucson.
