Performing Arts Spotlight - Intro

They say money makes the world go ‘round, but I posit that art is currency for the soul.

Our struggles, annoyances and sorrow can be lessened by simply stepping out of our realities and looking into other worlds. That’s what musicians, dancers, actors, composers, playwrights, choreographers, acrobats and singers give to humanity. These artists craft stories from their imaginative spirits and break us from the daily monotony of eking out a living; motivating us to dream and aspire for things greater.

Of course, the financial realities of staging shows can’t be overlooked. Organizations need to pay rent and the talent – while facing shrinking budgets, grants and attendees. Beth Dell of Beowulf Alley Theatre Company recently said that it is important to look at the costs of productions versus ticket prices. “The national average is that theatre tickets cover roughly 40-44% of operating costs. Theatres are dependent on donors.”

If you have the means to support local organizations, there isn’t a better time than now! For those of us with limited means, consider the community rewards of supporting a local production. Not only can it be cheaper than a night at a chain movie theatre - it’s keeping the money circulating in Tucson.

Think in terms of a karmic economic wheel. Most of the organizations within these pages not only take our minds out of time, but often provide sliding scale pricing for their tickets and for the education programs they offer to the young and old. The performing arts more than deserve our patronage.

Where ever your tastes lay, there is plenty to satisfy even the most staid this season. Eclectic diversions abound! We’d love for you to join us.
