I suspect that you, dear readers, probably embrace travelling the way publisher David Olsen and I do - as an opportunity to see new places and experience other cultures. Though sometimes I long to live beachside or in the forest, it's always good to come home because I love Tucson's unique culture - a miscellany blend of international traditions. Our burg really is a global village and I think this creates a community that holds a spirit of acceptance and a love of variety and for this we are blessed.
One only need glance at the event calendar to see The Old Pueblo's diversity through its celebrations, with October and November being a venerable explosion of festivals. From the International Drag King Extravaganza, Pride Parade and the Open Studio Tour to Nam Jam and the Veteran's Day Parade; from the Tucson Zombie Walk to the Chili Cook-Off and the Mesquite Milling Fiesta our town's events really span the gamut.
While all of these fetes welcome the public at large, not everyone is going to be personally, emotionally invested in attending. I'll go to the drag king conference, though I'm not a drag king, and I may go to Nam Jam, though I'm not a veteran. It's not going to speak to me as personally as it will to those attending because they consider themselves a part of those specific communities.
The All Souls Procession, however, commemorates something every single being on this planet faces: Death. And all of us are emotionally affected by loss of life. What could be more personally inclusive than that? More than just the procession, All Souls features a bevy of activity surrounding the Sunday, November 8 parade.
