Oh, October, how I love thee. The town shakes off the hot summer dust and comes back to life with longer nights and cooler climes. This is the month to enjoy being outside! Our burg is cranking with things to do al fresco, so please check out our events calendar!
October is also the month to gear up for November’s All Souls Procession weekend. If you are intrigued by the glorious puppets, costumes and masks that punctuate one of Tucson’s cultural defining events, jump in and become a part of it. Kelly Lewis covers the weekly family-friendly, free workshops here. Taking place downtown Sunday, Nov 7, the 21st annual procession is again anticipating crowds of 20,000 people commemorating death – be it of a family member, friend, pet or civil rights. I imagine there will be memorials for Gulf of Mexico creatures lost to the BP oil spill. Organized by the non-profit Many Mouths One Stomach, the weekend carries with it a price tag upwards of $50,000. It relies on the community for support. To help sustain the event, visit AllSoulsProcession.org and click on the donate button.
In September, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that one-fifth of Arizonans are below the poverty level, second only to Mississippi, and the Community Food Bank could use our donations to help feed the hungry. On Oct 23, Blue Raven Gallery & Gifts is hosting Cookin’ In The Courtyard, a fundraiser for Community Food Bank. The barbeque dinner will include grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, lots of veggies and live music. For more information, go to BlueRavenGalleryandGifts.com or call Katie Iverson at 405-3657.
