Saddle Up, Road Warriors

By Donovan Durband

The project that seemed like it would never end before it even got started is nearing completion -within its $200 million budget and at least four months ahead of schedule.

The widening of Interstate 10 between Prince Road and 29th Street from three lanes in each direction to four lanes is incrementally winding up. Eight exit and entrance ramps were open as of July 21 with the rest slated for imminent access.

All four entrance and exit ramps are open at Miracle Mile, and the eastbound exit ramps are open at Grant and Speedway. Grant and Speedway westbound entrance ramps are also accessible.

Melissa Benton, a public outreach coordinator with Gordley Design Group, speaking on behalf of the Arizona Department of Transportation, said "All remaining ramps are scheduled to be open between mid-August and early September."

Some of the ramps that are open will be temporarily closed again to complete landscaping work through November. Cross-street access at Cushing Street and 18th Street will be available after all the ramps have re-opened.

The posted speed limit on I-10 between Prince Road and 29th Street will be 65 mph after the project is complete, up from 55 mph prior to the widening project.
