Steve Baker the Penny Man
Nothing is more embedded the American psyche than the cars we drive. Add to that the subset of American car owners who choose to express themselves by decorating their cars.
In Tucson, one example is landscaper Ron Frey, whose new work vehicle, like his recently “retired” one, is covered with statues of dogs. But not just any dogs, as these statues represent dogs Frey has owned, and others he has given shelter to when people others could no longer care for them.
“The idea was I would find homes for them,” Frey said, “but the truth is that home usually (ended up) being my own.”
Over the weekend of Oct 8-9, a caravan of decorated vehicles will enter Tucson on a stop of their trek from Los Angeles to Douglas, AZ. This is all in conjunction with the screening of Automorphosis at The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress St., and happily coincides with Oct 9’s 2nd Saturdays Downtown.
The vehicle themselves will be on display in parking spots along the event’s footprint. This will certainly add another treat to the 2nd Saturdays mix and give attendees an additional thrilling sight. It may also inspire others decorate their own vehicles.
Why get a normal paint job, when you can paint and decorate your vehicle in a way that says, “You,” especially if the Arizona sun has begun to burn off your car’s clear coat?
