It all began in 2005 with the premiere of Michael Toubassi’s Tucson music scene documentary High and Dry, which spawned a celebratory concert/band re-union that September weekend at Club Congress.
Now a local institution, the Tucson Film and Music Festival is in its sixth year and runs Oct 7-11 with events and screenings concentrated downtown.
The opening film is Ride, Rise, Roar - a David Byrne concert film. Other highlights include Mars, a film by Geoff Marslett with the soundtrack by Howe Gelb, and Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, narrated by Lawrence Fishburne.
Ride, Rise, Roar, which opened at the SXSW film festival, combines concert footage with behind the scenes documentation of unprecedented rehearsals, collaborations and revelations about the creative process behind Byrne’s music.
Everyday Sunshine documents the rise of Fishbone, one of the more electrifying and genre defying bands of the otherwise somewhat musically barren Reagan years. The screening takes place at Rialto Theatre, followed up by Fishbone rocking the stage.
TFMF also features shorts, music videos and live music shows. The festival’s headquarters is at The Hut, and includes bands on the 2nd Saturdays’ Scott Stage Oct 9.
