There’s a new experiment downtown.
In October, brothers Adam and Ned Krantz opened Social Science Junk Shop, filled with old cameras, typewriters, chandeliers, pillows and paintings of velvet.
“I’m really fascinated by how people interact with their stuff,” Adam said.
It’s an experiment in another sense too. It’s “a shop where people can support local business without the need for new production” and thus avoid the ills that have shadowed industrialization, he said. “We’re finding the best stuff that’s already out there and making it available.”
Both brothers have a background in theater – Adam, a co-founder of the Parasol Project, as a performer; Ned, a technician for Apple, as a backstage tech. At Social Science, Adam runs the store, Ned does the technical repairs, and the rear of the store is a cabaret, with Parasol Project slated for monthly performances. “I really want to foster the performance arts community,” Adam said.
Social Science is located at 43 S. 6th Ave. For more information, call 261-6211 or go to SocialScienceTucson.com.
