The zesty aroma of Peruvian spices and the quirky up-beat Spanish music are the first things that welcome guests at Don Pedro’s Peruvian Bistro on South 6th Avenue.
Their food was thrilling and delicious - I have never tasted anything quite like it before. I ordered the Lomo Saltado; sautéed tenderloin beef with onions, tomatoes, French fries, and green onions.
At a moderately priced $10.95, this juicy masterpiece was worth every penny. The creamy buttered rice and the unique blend of spices mixed with meat kept my mouth watering for more!
In the center of the table was a small bowl of Cancha; a toasted corn dish designated for nibbling throughout the meal. Next to the Cancha were the Aji Amarillo spice, a creamy yellow sauce, and a Chiltepin chili sauce sure to spice up any entree!
Make sure to try the Peruvian Soda, Inca Kola. The sweet gold drink tasted like a blend between bubblegum and Mountain Dew, unique to only two places in Tucson.
As far as dessert was concerned, I could hardly pass up the opportunity to try Helado de Lucuma, an original Peruvian dessert. Although it was a bright orange color, it tasted like creamy chocolate ice cream, made from a tropical fruit native to the coastal valleys of Peru.
Other Peruvian originals include Jalea (deep fried fish, shrimp and calamari served with salsa criolla), Cebiche (fresh flounder fish marinated in lime juice), and Helado de Algarrobina (dessert made from the Black Carob Tree.)
If you feel like a unique experience with Peruvian flare, you can visit the bistro Monday-Friday, 10:30am to 9pm and Sunday 10:30am to 6pm. They accept cash and credit cards.
