Hacienda’s Rustic Elegance

Gorgeous scenery on the drive up to Hacienda del Sol and a colorful garden stroll are the prelude to happy hour at the Terraza Garden Patio and Lounge.  Monday through Friday from 3pm-6pm all small plates are 1/2 off and drinks are specially priced. Try the crab cakes ($6) served with balsamic molasses and mango puree, crunch into the satisfying seafood flautas ($3) with a moist flavorful filling. For a fresh-from-the-garden delight, sip a bowl of grilled golden tomato gazpacho ($3).  Warm caprese bruschetta ($4) features panela cheese and savory tomato jam with grilled ciabatta, and a mound of greens punctuated with basil.  All of the small plates are artistically presented and appetizer-size.  Many of the fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown in the adjacent organic garden.

All selections from the extensive wine list are available by the glass for $5 or $8.  Well drinks are $3.50 and beers are 1/2 off.  House margaritas are $5, and the Hacienda Margarita made with Cazadores Reposado and agave nectar is $6.  Although not discounted during happy hour, the specialty “Culinary Cocktails and Infusions” are worth trying, such as the award-winning Hacienda Cooler ($10) made with gin, cucumber, cilantro, and lime juice.

Built in 1929 as a girls’ boarding school, Hacienda del Sol evolved into a guest ranch (and legendary hideaway of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy). Terraza Lounge features cozy, intimate spaces, and a resonant piano. Visually drink in the spectacular views of the Catalinas through the windows, or outside on the patio.

Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort is located at 5501 N. Hacienda del Sol Rd. Details at HaciendaDelSol.com and 299-1501.
