TRD fans rejoice! After a summer hiatus, our local Rollergirls are ready to rip up the rink once again. Now beginning its seventh season, Tucson Roller Derby has thrilled spectators for years with feats of competitive athleticism, admirable strength and considerable stamina. Bouts include between-period music from local bands and raffles featuring fun prizes. This fall, TRD's fast-footed flat-track females are sure to amaze both newcomers and longtime fans.
For the uninitiated, the TRD league currently consists of five teams: reigning champions Vice Squad, the Iron Curtain Commies, the Furious Truckstop Waitresses, the Copper Queens, and the TRD Saddletramps, a travelling team created for inter-state events. Player positions are pivot, blocker and jammer. Think Roller Derby is fake? With team members who go by monikers such as Ferocious Oxide, The Turkish Slammer and Jackrabbit Slams, I dare you to say so out loud at a match.
Tucson Roller Derby is more than just ripped fishnets, tattoos, and flying elbows, though. These talented and kind-hearted skaters have collected canned food items for the Community Food Bank, accepted donations for hurricane survivors, and washed dogs to support the Humane Society. TRD features local charities at every bout.
Tucson Roller Derby kicks off the season in style with a double-header expo bout on Saturday, October 17 at the Tucson Indoor Sports Center, 1065 W. Grant Rd. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the action starts at 7pm. Catch the Saddletramps, the underage Derby Brats, Dry Heat Derby, L.A. Derby Dolls and others in action! Cost is $8 at the door, kids under 12 are free. More information is available at www.TucsonRollerDerby.com.
